Historical and traditional housing in Guanajuato: its role in tourism

The city of Guanajuato since its foundation in 1570, like the adjacent mineral towns that supported the mineral extraction infrastructure, arose to provide housing for mine workers. In Santa Fe Real de Minas de Guanajuato, there were the “companies” for purifying the silver through the benefit haciendas, which were configured as an industrial corridor along the river. The mountains also defined the shape of the city, delimiting its expansion. In the 19th century and early 20th century, urban expansion took place towards the Olla Dam, which together with the typological transformations in the city center have defined the landscape of Guanajuato today. The objective of this research is to present through historical documents the way in which these common, popular or residential houses have been seen, which sometimes seem not to be recognized as the essence of the city. Likewise, a state of the art of historic housing is presented with the tourist phenomenon that has transformed it, giving a turn towards gentrification and touristification.
